Folk craftsmen all over the country made full use of the flexible stems, skins, cores, leaves and roots of herbaceous plants to create and summarize rich weaving techniques such as weaving, tying, braiding, buckling, tying, twisting, winding, netting, stringing and plate, making straw weaving an important source of daily necessities for the general public. China is rich in herbaceous plant resources, and there are many suitable raw materials for weaving in the north and south, so there are many kinds of straw weaving in different places, and each has its own local characteristics. Straw products are mainly made of straw mat, straw curtain, straw mat, straw basket, straw fan, straw hat, straw shoes and other practical goods, and some are also used as ornaments for display. Since 1840s, straw weaving has been sold abroad. Since the middle of the 20th century, due to the needs of modern life, straw weaving has developed rapidly, with more and more varieties. Xuxing straw weaving is a traditional folk weaving craft, which is mainly popular in Xuxing Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. Xuxing is a famous town of straw weaving in the south of the Yangtze River. The local people are used to weaving daily necessities with the yellow straw stems produced in this town. As early as the Qing Dynasty, the Jiading yellow grass slippers made by Xu Xing were exported to Eurasia. Xuhang yellow grass is smooth and tough, and its color is elegant. The handicrafts woven with Xuhang yellow grass have clear texture, fine density and symmetry, degree of tightness, smoothness and smoothness, and are more exquisite and beautiful after dyeing or affixing with bright patterns. Xuxing straw woven products include slippers, bags, fruit pots, cup covers, basin mats and so on. They are rich in color, beautiful in style, light and convenient in use, distinctive in local characteristics and rich in local flavor. Now, the yellow grass has been changed from wild to artificial cultivation, which is used for straw weaving, and the quality is better. Xuhang straw weaving is purely handmade, which takes a lot of time to weave. It can not form large-scale production, and the economic benefit is not high, so it is difficult to resist the impact of modern market economy. At present, there are few craftsmen who make a living by weaving straw. Only a few rural women use their leisure time to weave some straw sandals and bags for sporadic sales. In addition, with the development of urban construction, large areas of yellow grass disappeared rapidly, leading to the shortage of raw materials for straw weaving in Xuhang.
