Shanghai style boxwood carving is a kind of carving art produced during the opening period of Shanghai. After more than a century of development, it has gradually formed a mature style of Shanghai style wood carving art. In the 1920s and 1930s, Xu Baoqing, who studied in Tushanwan Institute of technology, developed the art system of Shanghai style boxwood carving with regional characteristics after more than 70 years of tempering. He and his disciples became the representatives of Shanghai style boxwood carving.
Shanghai style boxwood carving combines western realistic sculpture techniques with Chinese traditional carving techniques. It pays equal attention to both traditional and realistic subjects, pays attention to moral expression, and is good at capturing vivid moments in real life, reflecting a strong flavor of life and national culture.
Shanghai style boxwood carving has rich artistic content and high cultural taste, which can provide an important reference for the study of Shanghai style culture. In recent years, due to the impact of market economy, the development of pure handmade Shanghai style boxwood carving has been hindered due to long construction period and low economic benefits, and there is a crisis of inheritance. It is urgent for the relevant parties to take protective measures to help it out of the trough and carry forward again.
