Introduction to Ningde Huotong line lion
Applicant: Ningde City, Fujian Province
Huotong line lion is now preserved in Huotong Town, Ningde City, Fujian Province. It is also called "beating lion" by the local people. It is a unique form of folk entertainment and an acrobatic show disguised as an animal with a unique style.
According to historical legend, Huang Jugong, a counsellor and founder of the Sui Dynasty, once irrigated Huotong's village land for the benefit of his people. He was commemorated by holding the "February 2" Lantern Festival. The line lion performance is one of the most distinctive programs in the "February 2" Lantern Festival. Since the middle and late Ming Dynasty, Huotong line lion has become an important part of local festival culture.
Before the line lion performance, the stage production, lighting effect configuration and rope layout are all operated manually. The tying of the rope is the key link in the performance of the line lion. Every piercing action must be careful. The ball held by the line lion is delicate and dexterous. The large net basket is covered with a small ball that can rotate freely. The small ball is equipped with lights, which glitters at night like stars. The lion's body is made of various materials, with bamboo frame filled with cotton, cloth, rubber, etc. the lion's hair is made of special colored plastic wire. Through the reform of folk artists in past dynasties, the volume of line lion has developed from small as puppet to huge and heavy now, the structure has changed from simple to complex, and the production technology has also been greatly developed and improved.
Huo Tong's line lion manipulates the lion to perform all kinds of movements through ropes, which integrates literary and martial arts. Its performances include single lion (male), double lion (one male and one female), three lions (one female and two sons) and five lions (one female and four sons). Line lion performance was first performed along the way, dancing while walking, and then turned into a fixed stage performance. Through the practical creation of folk artists of past dynasties, the expressive force of line lion is more and more abundant. It can perform various postures, such as sitting, squatting, waking up, stretching, climbing and so on. Only the Lion plays the ball, such as looking for the ball, chasing the ball, getting the ball and so on. All these dynamic performances of the lion depend on the collective manipulation and close cooperation of the artists.
Huo Tong line lion not only has rich performance content, but also has a unique way of inheritance, which has the characteristics of family inheritance, which leads to the lack of successors. Huotong line lion can be regarded as a unique work in China. It is of great significance to explore, rescue and protect Huotong line lion for understanding and studying Chinese folk culture.
