Introduction to Shanbei Storytelling:
Applicant: Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province
Shanbei storytelling is a very important form of Quyi storytelling in Northwest China, which is mainly popular in Yan'an and Yulin in Northern Shaanxi Province. At first, the poor and blind people used the folk songs of Northern Shaanxi to sing some legends. Later, they absorbed the melodies of Meihu, Qinqiang, Daoqing and Xintianyou, and gradually formed a storytelling form of rap performance. The traditional performance form of storytelling in Northern Shaanxi is that artists use northern Shaanxi dialect to narrate stories by playing and singing with Sanxian or Pipa in hand. According to the different accompaniment instruments, it is called "sanxianshu" or "Pipa Shu". In the 1930s and 1940s, Shanbei Shuoshu was transformed by the famous artist Han Qixiang, and developed into a folk art Shuoshu style in which one person simultaneously played five musical instruments, namely big Sanxian (or Pipa), Bangzi, Shuaban, jijimupian called "machazha" and Xiaogong (or cymbal). The lyrics of Shuoshu in Northern Shaanxi are popular and fluent, with strong local characteristics; the melody is rich, and the style is vigorous and rugged, known as "nine tunes and eighteen Tunes", among which the commonly used ones are [single tone], [double tone], [Xiliang tune], [Shandong tune], [pingdiao], [crying tune], [duixiao], [wudiao], etc. There are many traditional storytelling programs in Northern Shaanxi, among which the representative long ones are Hua Liu Ji, Qian Qian Ji, Guan Deng Ji, Diao Ling fan, and the short ones are Zhang Qi Jie's coming to earth. Since the 1940s, the Shaanxi Gansu Ningxia border region literary association has set up a storytelling group. With the help of Lin Shan, a new literary and artistic worker, Han Qixiang and other artists have successively compiled some new books to coordinate with the revolutionary struggle, such as Liu Qiao's reunion, Wang piqin's going south, Yichuan's great victory, turning over and I'm storytelling to Chairman Mao, etc. Han Qixiang, Liu Xuwang, Dang Fuxiang and Wang Jinkao are influential artists in Northern Shaanxi. In recent years, the development of storytelling in Northern Shaanxi has been in trouble, the old artists have gradually died, and there is no one to inherit the art, which is in urgent need of support and protection.
