Yangzhou Pinghua is a kind of folk art storytelling in Yangzhou dialect. It is popular in Northern Jiangsu, Zhenjiang, Nanjing and Shanghai. Rising in the early Qing Dynasty, it soon formed a prosperous situation of "the Sui and Tang Dynasties are talked about everywhere in calligraphy and Ci, and heroes are on their own side". There are 10 books such as the Three Kingdoms and the water margin, and there are 20 famous storytellers with unique skills. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, some artists enriched traditional programs according to their own life experience, while others created new books. For example, after repeated trials, ye Shuanglin, who became a Yangzhou Pinghua artist, expressed his experience and indignation in yuezhuan, saying that his performance of Zong liushou Jiaoyin was "filled with tears" and moving; Pu Lin compiled qingfengzha according to her life experience, and created a group of low-level characters represented by piwulazi, which had a profound influence; artist Zou Bixian created a new book《 The satire and ridicule of the biography of Feifei, which aimed at the prominent figures in the ruling class, reflected the voice of the oppressed to a certain extent and enriched the content of Yangzhou commentary.

Yangzhou Pinghua is well-known for its meticulous description, rigorous structure, echo from beginning to end, complicated and well-organized ideas, rich performance details, vivid characters and humorous language. Artists in the creation and performance also pay great attention to rendering Yangzhou local scenery, with strong local color. Yangzhou Pinghua performance is good at absorbing the advantages of brother art, focusing on the use of oral skills. Among them, the Three Kingdoms and Shuihu are two popular long programs with their own schools. Li Guohui and LAN Yuchun in Xianfeng and Tongzhi years of Qing Dynasty are the most famous and influential performers of the Three Kingdoms. They are called "Li faction" and "Lan faction" by later generations. The eight disciples of Li Guohui are called "Bajun", and Kang Guohua is good at speaking and playing the role of Kongming Kong Ming is known as "Kong Ming", and his style of speaking and acting in the Three Kingdoms is called "Kang school". Deng Guangdou, the famous actor of "Water Margin", has won the reputation of "beating the Water Margin" for his wonderful expression and action. Later, when Wang Shaotang inherited the calligraphy skills of his predecessors, he developed four "ten books" including Song Jiang, Wu Song, Shi Xiu and Lu Junyi, which became a unique one and was called "Water Margin of Wang School".

The traditional programs of Yangzhou Pinghua can be divided into three categories, including Eastern Han Dynasty, Western Han Dynasty, Three Kingdoms, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Shuihu and yuezhuan, Green Peony, baqiaozhu, jiuliandeng and qingfengzha, and Fengshenbang, journey to the West and jigongzhuan. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he published Wang Shaotang's novel water margin, namely four "ten chapters" of Song Jiang, Wu Song, Shi Xiu and Lu Junyi, and published Yangzhou Pinghua anthology and Yangzhou Shuoshu anthology. At the same time, there also appeared "march into the north of Jiangsu" and "Li Jin" based on the novel, such as liehuogang, Linhai Xueyuan, Hongyan and Xia Yun Some long, medium and short bibliographies, such as no smoking in Guangling, etc. The famous actors in this stage include Wang Xiaotang, Wang Litang, Yu Youchun, Li Xintang and Hui Zhaolong.

Yangzhou Pinghua is now facing unprecedented difficulties. The performance team is shrinking, the audience is aging, the bookstores are old, and there are no successors. Its survival and development are facing severe challenges and need to be effectively protected.
