Gongnong township is located in the southeast of Longshan District, Liaoyuan City, Jilin Province. It borders Weijin town and Lingyun Township in Dongliao County in the East, Anshu town in Dongliao County in the south, Baiquan Town in Dongliao County in the west, and Fuzhen street, Nankang street and Xining street in the north. The total area of the township is 34 square kilometers.
In December 1971, Liaoyuan industrial and agricultural commune was established. In February 1976, the three brigades of Wangjia, Daliang and Anguo in Weijin commune of Dongliao county were assigned to Liaoyuan industrial and agricultural commune, and the four brigades of Qiyi, Hongqi, Dongsheng and Zhongcheng were assigned to Shanwan commune of Liaoyuan city. In 1984, the commune was transformed into a township. In 2018, the registered residence population of workers, peasants and townships was 14527. As of June 2020, Gongnong township has jurisdiction over 11 administrative villages.
