Nanzhuang Town is named after the township government's residence in Nanzhuang village. Nanzhuang township was built in 1953. In 1958, Nanzhuang people's commune was rebuilt. In 1984, Nanzhuang township was rebuilt. In August 19, Nanzhuang Town was rebuilt. As of June 2020, Nanzhuang Town has jurisdiction over 27 administrative villages, and the town people's government is located in Nanzhuang village. Nanzhuang Town is the planting site of yam in Lixian County, a national geographical indication product of China.

In 2013, the total agricultural output value of Nanzhuang Town was 368 million yuan, the per capita net income of farmers was 3895 yuan, and the total industrial output value was 247 million yuan.
