Beigang

Beigang town is the center of Taiwan's sugar industry, a town of Yunlin County. It is located in the west central part of Taiwan Island, on the right bank of the lower reaches of Beigang River, about 16 kilometers away from the coast in the West and the foothills in the East. The population is about 54000.

history

It was one of the main ports in Western Taiwan in Qing Dynasty. In the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, the mainland immigrated to an important land landing area for reclamation in Taiwan. It is said that Yan Siqi, Zheng Zhilong and other groups entered Taiwan to operate, that is, they started here, and from there they have entered the area of Chiayi City.

Geography

Beigang Creek originates from the eastern Piedmont area and the West lower plain. In Beigang area, the river course is very circuitous, the deposition is vigorous, and the estuary beach develops rapidly. Since the Qing Dynasty, the coastline has moved westward. The upper reaches of Beigang River were not navigable, and the lower reaches of Beigang River were not navigable because of siltation. Therefore, the name of Beigang River remained as a port, which was not conducive to navigation.

Culture

Mazu Temple (Tianhou Temple), founded in the early Qing Dynasty by moving incense from Fujian Province, is the earliest and largest of more than 200 Mazu temples in Taiwan Island. Every year, there is a God's birthday and a grand temple fair.

After the rise of modern sugar industry, the export products of sugar industry in Beigang were transported by South Railway, running through the railway, and exported to Kaohsiung port. There is No. 19 provincial highway from Changhua to Tainan.
