By the end of 2018, Tongan town had 25764 registered residence population. As of June 2020, 10 administrative villages were under Tongan town, and the township government was stationed at Anyi village.

In 1282, Tongan post was established.

Before February 1958, it was under the jurisdiction of Dingxi County, and then Longxi County.

In May 1959, Tongan commune was established.

In February 1983, it was renamed tonganyi commune. In July of the same year, it was renamed tonganyi township.

In April 2000, it was transferred to Anyi town.
