Caotan street, belonging to Weiyang District, Xi'an City, Shaanxi Province, is located in the northeast of Weiyang District. The origin of place names
During the reign of emperor Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty, the Weishui River moved northward and formed a beach at today's caotan street. The government set up a coal wharf here. In 1750, Caodian charcoal wharf town was built. In 1796-1820, it was called caotan town. In the late Qing Dynasty, it was renamed caotan town.

During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of Qing Dynasty (1736-1795), caotan town belonged to Xianning county.
In 1902, the county office was set up.
In 1906, it was abolished.
In 1913, it belonged to Chang'an County.

Caotan street is located in the alluvial plain of Weihe River. The terrain is uplifted from north to South and east to west respectively. The topography mainly includes flood plain and the first terrace of Weihe River, and the flood plain includes the flood plain of Weihe River and the flood plain of Bahe River. The main natural disasters in caotan Street are drought, flood, continuous rain, strong wind, earthquake, etc. The most serious drought occurred in 1929, which lasted for three years, with no harvest and starvation everywhere. Most of the flood disasters occurred before the 1990s. The most serious one occurred in August 1954. The peak flow of the Weihe River reached 7220 cubic meters per second, and the whole Weihe River was flooded. The flood water flowed back along the West Bank of the Bahe River to the old dyke in the east of XIAJIA Village. Thousands of acres of good farmland were covered in a vast ocean, and the water depth was about 1 meter. The most serious wind disaster occurred in the afternoon of July 28, 1997. Along the Weihe River, more than 200 big trees were blown down, some power transmission lines and communication lines were damaged by the wind, many walls collapsed, thousands of acres of orchards were reduced, 800 acres of fish ponds were killed, and large areas of corn fell to the ground. The most serious earthquake occurred on April 19, the second year of Longqing in the Ming Dynasty (1568). The epicenter of the earthquake was located in caotan, with a magnitude of 6.75. All houses in the area were destroyed and more than 200 people died.
