Chawalong township is high in the north and low in the south, surrounded by mountains, high and low, and complex terrain. The Nujiang River runs through the township from north to south.
The highest altitude is 6740 meters of Meili Snow Mountain in the township. The southern Valley is only about 2200 meters above sea level, with an average altitude of about 2800 meters. It belongs to the subtropical climate zone of the southern ridge of Himalayas, with mild climate in four seasons, abundant rainfall, sufficient sunshine and long frost free period. The annual sunshine hours are 2600 hours, the frost free period is more than 250 days, the annual average temperature is 12 ℃, the maximum frozen soil depth is 0.25m, the extreme minimum temperature is - 5 ℃, the extreme maximum temperature is 31 ℃, and the annual average rainfall is about 810mm. The rainy season is mainly distributed in March, April, July and August.
The relatively low altitude area along Nujiang River and Weiqu River Valley in chawalong township is a "hot Canyon", with high temperature and low humidity, exposing a large area of bare soil and rock.

By the end of 2004, the total area of cultivated land in the township was 19425 mu, which was all dry land. Restricted by the topographic conditions, more than 50% of the cultivated land was slope land, and the plot area was small, the soil layer was thin, and the vast majority of the land was still manual operation, so the production efficiency was low. Most of the crops are winter wheat, highland barley, potato, corn and other crops, with an annual total grain output of 10.87128 million jin.

Before 2005, chawalong township was led to the outside world by the mule horse post road and the rope on the Nujiang River, and all materials were carried by people and horses. Like an "isolated island", it has experienced many vicissitudes.
In 2004, gongcha highway has been opened to traffic to K45 + 550 of Liusha section in chawalong township. Except for Liusha section and a steel bridge in buzeyonggou, other sections of highway have been basically completed and can be opened to traffic. 130 kilometers of mule and horse roads were restored with an investment of 2.12 million yuan.
In July 2005, the gongcha highway from qiunatong village, Bingzhongluo Township, Gongshan County, Yunnan Province to chawalong township was opened to traffic, with a total length of 56 km and a total investment of 17 million yuan. Although the gongcha highway was simple, rugged and steep at that time, it ended the history of no highway in chawalong township.
Before October 2009, there was no traffic from Chayu county to chawalong Township, so they could only bypass the Yunnan Tibet or Sichuan Tibet line,

In December 2013, the national development and Reform Commission approved the feasibility study report on the reconstruction project of the new Yunnan Tibet Road from the boundary of Yunnan and Tibet to zhuwagen road in Chayu county. The project starts from the junction of Yunnan and Tibet in chawalong Township and ends at zhuwagen Town, with a total length of about 253km. The whole line is reconstructed according to the standard of class IV Highway.
On April 30, 2015, the reconstruction and expansion project of Yunnan Tibet new passage (Chayu county section) started. Starting from the junction of Yunnan and Tibet in the south of chawalong Township and ending at Sangjiu village, zhuwagen Town, Chayu County, the reconstruction and expansion of class IV Highway is 264km, three branch lines are 40.7km long and subgrade width is 6.5m. The construction period is 36 months.
In June 2015, the road hardening construction project of Xueba village in walong township was started. The content is to reconstruct 10.9 km of grade IV cement road, with a total investment of 18.87 million yuan.
In May 2017, chuni village in chawalong township was not connected to the highway, and other villages were connected to the highway.
In July 2015, Jiaxing highway in Longpu village of chawalong township was started, with the construction of a 13.23km gravel road and a 21m steel bridge
