Niujiaowan township is under the jurisdiction of Butuo County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Niujiaowan township was established in 1956, changed to commune in 1974, and restored to township in 1984.

In December 2019, the people's Government of Sichuan Province agreed to abolish niujiaowan Township and put its administrative area under the jurisdiction of niujiaowan Town, which is located at No. 88, Niujiao Road, Niujiao village.

Niujiaowan township is located in the southeast of the county, across the Jinsha River and Yunnan Province, 81 kilometers away from the county. It covers an area of 63.5 square kilometers and has a population of 5000. Bujin, niubai and Manau highways meet here. It has jurisdiction over five village committees: Niujiao, cailuo, Badu, HaoGou and Jiefang.

Niujiaowan Township mainly produces corn, rice and potato. Plant peanuts and sugar cane. There are niujiaowan Dayan hydropower station and niujiaowan hydropower station.
