Originally known as the South pool field, due to several fires, neighborhood dilapidated, broken tile piles, so the name tile field. It got its name from the town government in wazichang.

Evolution of administrative districts
During the period of the Republic of China, it was subordinate to Bazhong county. In 1933, the Soviet government of Wazi district was set up in Changsheng county. In 1935, Bazhong County restored the old system and established Wazi township. In May 1951, Bazhong county was divided into Yilong county and Wazi township was newly built. Wazi people's commune was established in 1958 and renamed "May 1st" commune in 1966. It was renamed in 1971. It was changed to Wazi Township in 1983. In September 1992, it was changed into Wazi town.
