Before 1949, it was named Ganping Township, which belonged to the Fifth District.
In May 1950, Ganping township was divided into five townships: Ganxi, Pingdan, Shidong, Jiazhou and quankong.

In October 1958, Ganxi township was changed into Ganxi commune.
