Geological characteristics
About 400 million years ago, zhongyangtou town in Zhongshan County and its adjacent area was a vast ocean, where the Cambrian strata of Early Paleozoic were deposited, and then Caledonian crustal tectonic movement occurred, which made geosynclinal fold return and rise to land. About 400 million years ago, seawater intrusion made this area become epicontinental sea, depositing the Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian strata of Late Paleozoic. About 225 million years ago, there was a strong Indosinian movement, accompanied by the intrusion of magmatic rocks. The crust of this area rose again to land, thus ending the marine deposition. About 180 million years ago, Huilong and other places in the county had Mesozoic lower Jurassic lacustrine sediments in the Indosinian depression basin. During this period and after Yanshan, the tectonic activities were frequent, accompanied by large-scale magmatic intrusion. The granite bodies of Huashan and Guposhan were formed in this period.

The upper stagnant water is relatively shallow from the surface, and the burial depth is less than 10 meters, so it is easy to excavate, and the water volume is generally small. The depth of phreatic water is generally less than 10 meters, and the amount of phreatic water is abundant, and it is less affected by the season. It is a common drinking water source in rural areas, and also part of the industrial water source. Spring is the main discharge way of karst water. The groundwater in the county is widely distributed and abundant. The groundwater runoff is 58 million cubic meters, and the lowest flow is about 1.6 cubic meters per second. There are eight underground rivers, including shaohuidao, Shiti, egongdao, Wanggao, shibajin, pingshanyan, shanbeichang and dahaiyan.
