Zhou Deqing (1277-1365)
Zhou Deqing was named rizhan and tingzhai. Zhou's family in Yangwei Town, Gao'an city. He was an outstanding phonologist and dramatist in Yuan Dynasty. Zhou Deqing's life is not well documented. He is probably a man of cloth clothes. However, his Zhongyuan phonology has a great influence on Chinese phonology and drama history. Zhongyuan Yinyun is written for the use of rhyme in Beiqu, which corrects the difference of rhyme between composers, and its sound correction is based on Zhongyuan phonetics. After the completion of the book, the composition and singing of traditional Chinese opera have been standardized, which promotes the unity of rhyme in traditional Chinese opera. Zhongyuan phonology is based on the actual pronunciation of the north at that time, and its rhyme is close to that of today's Beijing. Therefore, this book is a valuable material for the study of Putonghua pronunciation with the north as the main voice in modern times. In 1987, a symposium to commemorate the 710th anniversary of Zhou Deqing's birth was held in Gao'an. Experts and scholars from 23 provinces and cities across the country attended the conference, and Japanese scholars also submitted papers.
