Maxiang town

Maxiang town belongs to Xiang'an District of Xiamen City, Fujian Province, and is located in the middle and west of Xiang'an District of Xiamen city. Adjacent to neicuo town in the East, dongzui port in the west, Xindian town in the South and Hongtang town in the north, it is one of the "four ancient towns in Southern Fujian".

Ma Xiang town has a total area of 66.87 square kilometers, and has 36 community neighborhood committees. Its permanent population is about 270 thousand, of which 100 thousand are registered residence. There are tourist attractions such as Zhu Xi's prophecy, Yuan Wei hall and Town God's Temple.

Maxiang town is an important hometown of overseas Chinese and one of the ancestral places of Taiwan compatriots in Southern Fujian, known as a business center. It has won the honorary titles of "Ping'an town of Xiamen City", "important commercial town of Fujian Province" and "silver medal of Red Cross humanity" in Fujian Province.

On September 11, 2019, maxiang town was selected as the "top 100 comprehensive competitiveness of Chinese towns in 2018".

Historical evolution

Ma Xiang, also known as Fang Shan, belonged to min'anli in song, yuan and Ming Dynasties, and was called Ma Jia Xiang and Ma CuO Xiang.

In the 40th year of Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1775), santing, called maxiang hall, was set up in the five, six and seven cities of Min'an, Xiangfeng and tongheli, which belonged to Quanzhou Prefecture.

During the reign of Guangxu, Wan Youzheng once wrote 18 volumes of "records of Quanzhou Ma Xiang Ting" for "Ma Xiang Ting", which is one of the local chronicles of Fujian Province in Qing Dynasty.

During the period of the Republic of China, the whole country implemented the policy of "Abolishing the hall to change the county", abolishing the maxiang hall, which should be changed into "Maxiang county". However, unexpectedly, at that time, maxiang hall was not transformed into "Maxiang county", but maxiang town was transferred to Tong'an County, and Tong'an County sent "maxiang County assistant" to govern the town.

In October 1955, Ma Xiang township was established and returned to Ma Xiang district.

In June 1956, it was renamed maxiang town.

In February 1959, Ma Xiang commune was established.

In September 1961, the original maxiang town was called maxiang commune (only five-star brigade), which was under the jurisdiction of Maxiang district.

In April 1964, five villages in the original maxiang town were assigned to maxiang commune.

In April 1984, after the name of maxiang commune was changed, binxiang township was restored.

In 1987, Houbin township was abolished and assigned to maxiang town.

On May 1, 1997, Tong'an county was divided into districts, belonging to Tong'an District.

In October 2003, Xiang'an District was established under the jurisdiction of Xiang'an District.

In January 2021, Maxiang Town, Xiang'an District, Xiamen city was abolished and maxiang street, Xiang'an District was established.
