Zhoutan town is located on the North Bank of the Yangtze River in the suburb of Tongling City, Anhui Province. History and culture

Zhoutan market town was formed in the early Ming Dynasty and flourished in the reign of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It was named Zhoutan because it was a place where the Zhou family lived together. The ancient buildings include "octagonal pavilion", Zhou ancestral temple and Zhenliu ancient temple, which are all located in the east of the market town. Zhoutan town is the East Township of the ancient Tongcheng Town, which worships culture and martial arts since ancient times and is known as the "hometown of martial arts". In the 28th year of Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1848), thirty-six headmasters of Dongxiang (known as thirty-six Headmasters in the world) led hundreds of villagers who practiced martial arts to enter Jiuhua Mountain disguised as pilgrims and concealed swords and sticks. They captured the evil monks alive and got rid of harm for the people. From then on, the "thirty-six headmasters" had a great reputation. Dongxiang martial arts was famous all over the country and was known as "unable to beat Dongxiang". After the founding of new China, especially since the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, practicing boxing and martial arts has become a compulsory course for villagers to strengthen their bodies. In October 2018, Anhui provincial government approved Zhoutan town of Zongyang County to be under the jurisdiction of Tongling suburb.
