Gulai town is located in the northwest of Shengzhou City, 21 kilometers away from the urban area. It is adjacent to Chongren town in the East, Wangyuan and Zhuxi Township in the south, Zhuji City in the West and Keqiao District in the north. It is a typical mountain town. It is named after "Shungeng here, tianjiangjiagu". The town covers an area of 105.01 square kilometers (2017) and has a population of 24237 (2017). It has jurisdiction over one community and 20 administrative villages.

History of construction
In the first year of Tang Zhenguan (627), the county set up Township and Li, which governed 40 townships. Shigulai and other places belonged to Fushun township. According to Jiatai's Kuaiji annals, "the county governed 27 townships, 133 Li, which belonged to Zhengshun township at that time, and the fourth Li was Changjing, Xin'an, Wenquan and Ciwu.". In the Yuan Dynasty, Xiangli was changed into a capital map; in the tenth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty (1474), there were 56 capitals and 124 maps; in Fushun Township, there were 30 capitals, 31 capitals and 32 capitals, with three, two and two leading maps; in the Qing Dynasty, Shunan township was established in the third year of Xuantong (1911) under the Ming system.
