Aiyuan town is an important town and old revolutionary base area in the north of Siyang County in Jiangsu Province, bordering Shuyang in the north. It was the seat of the Anti Japanese democratic government of Sishu county during the Anti Japanese War, and was the site of the independent brigade of the New Fourth Army. On July 2, 2020, the people's Government of Jiangsu Province decided to abolish Aiyuan town and Liren Township and establish a new Aiyuan town. The former administrative region of Aiyuan town and Liren township is the administrative region of Aiyuan town.

In the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, it was called chonghebei city (belonging to Taoyuan County of Huai'an prefecture).

In 1957, Aiyuan township was established, named after the former site of "Aiyuan" martyrs' cemetery in the East. The commune was changed in 1958 and the township was restored in 1983.
