In the biography of Xie xiao'e written by Li Gongzuo of Tang Dynasty, it is said that "E is determined and hardworking. In April of the 13th year, she began to receive a commandment at Kaiyuan Temple in Sizhou. She took xiao'e as the title and never forgot her roots."
