translation
Who is closer to fame or life? Who is more praiseworthy of life or wealth? Who is more worrying about gain or loss? If you cherish reputation too much, you will have to pay a lot. If you store too much, you will lose too much. Therefore, if you know how to be satisfied, you will not be humiliated. If you know how to stop just enough, you will not encounter danger. Only in this way can you have long-term peace.
About the author
Tao Te Jing, also known as Tao Te Zhen Jing, Lao Zi, five thousand words and five thousand articles of Lao Zi, is a work of ancient Chinese pre Qin scholars before their separation, which was admired by all the scholars at that time. It is said that it was written by Lao Zi (i.e. Li Er, from Luyi, Henan Province) in the spring and Autumn period, and it is an important source of Taoist philosophy. Daodejing is divided into two parts: the first chapter is "Dejing" and the second chapter is "Daojing", which is not divided into chapters. Later, it is changed to "Daojing", with 37 chapters in the front and 38 chapters followed by "Dejing", which is divided into 81 chapters. It is the first complete philosophical work in Chinese history. Daodejing was regarded as a Taoist classic from 206 B.C. to 200 A.D., so some scholars think that Daodejing is divided into 81 chapters, which has obvious Taoist idea of "nine to one", and it is far fetched in the division of content. However, the first thirty-seven chapters of Tao Te Ching preach and the last forty-four chapters talk about morality. In short, Tao is the body and morality is the use. In the Qing Dynasty, Wei Yuan broke this Convention for the first time and divided Tao Te Ching into 68 chapters, maintaining the integrity of each chapter.

According to statistics, in Laozi, "Zhi Zhi" is divided into three chapters. Chapter 21: "the first system is famous. There is also a name, and the husband will know how to stop, so it is not dangerous to know how to stop. " In connection with the previous paragraph of this chapter, the meaning of this article is to say that when the enfeoffment system was established at the beginning, you (Marquis, kings, etc.) had a reputation. Now that you have a reputation, you should know that it is enough. If you know that enough is enough, you won't be destroyed. It can be seen that the old only want the Marquis and other rulers to "know". Chapter 44: "therefore, if you are satisfied and not humiliated, if you do not know how to stop, you can live for a long time." This sentence has been analyzed before. "Zhizhi" is similar to "contentment", and "contentment" is followed by "Zhizhi". It means that as long as you know enough, you will not encounter any danger. In this way, we can make our throne and body safe. From the analysis of the above two chapters, it can be seen that it is the rulers such as the Marquis and the king, not the working people, that Laozi wants them to "know". In Lao Tzu's view, the working people, who have been exploited and oppressed for a long time, can't get enough food and clothing?
