Idiom story
The old man who let the withered trees blossom is one of the famous folk legends in Japan. It is said that a kind old man raised a dog. One day, the dog barked at its owner and asked him to dig where it pointed. The old man dug up a lot of gold coins. When a cruel old man living nearby heard about this, he borrowed the dog and dug up the same place as the dog pointed out. The cruel old man became angry and killed the dog. The kind-hearted old man buried the dog and planted a tree next to it. Later, he made a mortar out of that tree, and gold and silver came out every spring. The cruel old man borrowed the mortar again, and spring was full of booty. In a fit of anger, he burned the mortar again. The good old man asked for mortar ash and scattered it on the dead tree, which was full of flowers. A rich man passed by and gave a good old man a lot of money. The cruel old man learned to do it again, but he was caught in the eyes of the rich man, and was scolded. the story is very popular, but few end with flowers in full bloom. Among them, the most popular one is the eyes of wild geese flying in the sky. There are different legends about the origin of the dog. Some say that it was floated from the upstream to the incense box, which contained a dog. Some legends say that a peach floats on the river and turns into a dog. Others said that the dog was carried by the Dragon Palace.
