Idiom story
He Yan was born in Nanyang (now Nanyang, Henan Province) during the period of Cao Wei in the Three Kingdoms. He had outstanding talent and beautiful appearance. He also liked to dress up. His face was delicate and white, incomparable. Therefore, Emperor Wei Ming suspected that he had a thick layer of white powder on his face. Once, on a hot day, Emperor Wei Ming sent for him and rewarded him with hot noodle soup. After a while, he was sweating so much that he had to wipe it with his own clothes. But after wiping his sweat, his face became whiter. Emperor Ming believed that he did not put on powder, but "Tianzi" white beauty. Later, because he married Princess Wei, he was worshipped as the Duwei of his son-in-law. So later generations took "Fu Fen he Lang" as an allusion to describe people's white and beautiful face, and even to describe some white objects. For example, Liu Yuxi, a great poet of the Tang Dynasty, wrote a poem entitled "he Lang is still without grace, not like Fu Fen at the beginning". Song (Wang Jing), who was also a poet of Tang Dynasty, also had the sentence "just like Fu Fen, he Lang" in his plum blossom Fu.
