"Ordinary people" is a feature film directed by Robert Redford and starring Donald Sutherland, Mary Taylor Moore and Timothy Hutton. It was released in the United States on September 19, 1980.

Based on Judith gerst's novel of the same name, the film tells the story of an ordinary middle-class family in the United States, which begins to become fragmented because of the unfortunate death of its second son.

Synopsis

The jarretts live in the suburbs of Chicago, USA. this is a happy family of four. Her husband Calvin (< / I > < I > Donald Sutherland) < / I > is a high-income lawyer, and her wife Beth is a smart housewife. However, there is an unexpected situation. Once, the eldest son Parker and the second son Conrad < I > (< / I > < I > Timothy Hutton < / I > < I > go boating, and Parker drowns. Since then, the whole family has been troubled. The mother, who always preferred her first son, buried her love for her husband and second son at the moment of Parker's death. What she did in the family was as cold and heartless as routine. In the shadow of his brother's death and his mother's indifference, Conrad, who attempted suicide, is still depressed and unable to get out of the spiritual dilemma. Husband Calvin is sandwiched between his wife and son. On the one hand, he is tolerant of his wife's indifference and ruthlessness, on the other hand, he is also concerned about Connor's life. He advised his son to see a psychologist, hoping to get his son out of the dilemma through psychotherapy. With the help of the psychologist and his girlfriend, Conrad finally got out of the shadow and returned to normal. However, the dark cloud that shrouds the family has not been cleared. When Conrad, relieved of his guilt, hugs his mother before going to bed, her mother Beth's response is cold and stiff. Her face of bewilderment and unwillingness are seen in the eyes of her husband. Calvin finally realized that his wife's paranoid indifference was the biggest obstacle to the reconstruction of the family. At the same time, he also realized that their relationship between husband and wife was on the verge of collapse. The next morning, her mother Beth chose to leave because she felt isolated at home.
