Idiom story
In the early period of Daoguang reign of Qing Dynasty, British ships often infringed upon China's Territorial Sea sovereignty, and secretly mapped the situation map of China's mountains and rivers, revealing the intention of aggression. Huang Juezi, who was the Minister of Honglu temple at that time, was very worried when he saw this situation, so he went to the imperial court to guard against the sinister intentions of foreign invaders. He said: "foreign countries should not be merciful, while the coastal areas are unprepared for danger." Then, he played "Discussion on banning smoking" and proposed for the first time to ban opium in China. In that memorial, he listed a large number of historical materials: since Opium came into China, millions of taels of silver have gone out every year. After three years of Daoguang, it became more and more serious. In Guangdong Province alone, from the third to the eleventh year of Daoguang, the annual outflow of silver was 17.8 million taels; from the eleventh to the fourteenth year of Daoguang, the annual outflow of silver was more than 20 million taels; since the fourteenth year of Daoguang, it has reached 30 million taels. In Fujian, Zhejiang, Shandong and Tianjin, there are tens of thousands of taels each year. Using China's useful wealth to fill the endless gap overseas, year after year, where is the bottom? If it goes on like this, it will become the worry of the sick country. In order to prohibit opium, death penalty should be used to achieve the purpose of enlightening the deaf. Emperor Daoguang agreed with Huang Juezi. Soon after, he appointed Lin Zexu as the imperial envoy and went to Guangdong to ban smoking. "Enlightening the deaf" means that the voice is so loud that even the deaf can hear it. It means to wake up the confused and numb people with amazing language.
