In the spring and Autumn period, Duke Xian of Jin believed in slander and killed the crown prince Shen Sheng. Then he sent someone to catch Shen Sheng's younger brother Chong er. Hearing the news, Chong'er escaped from the state of Jin and lived in exile for more than ten years.
After thousands of hardships, Chong'er came to the state of Chu. King Cheng of Chu believed that Chong'er would have great achievements in the future, so he welcomed him as a guest of honor.
One day, the king of Chu hosted a banquet for Chonger. They drank and talked. The atmosphere was very harmonious. Suddenly the king of Chu asked Chong Er, "how can you repay me if you go back to Jin one day and become king?" Chong Er thought a little and said, "beautiful women are waiting for you, precious silk. You have a lot of rare birds, feathers, ivory and animal skins. They are rich in Chu. How can Jin have any rare things for you?" The king of Chu said, "you are too modest. Although you say so, you should show me something?" Chong Er replied with a smile, "if it's your blessing. If I can come back to China to be in power, I would like to be friendly with your country. If one day there is a war between Jin and Chu, I will order the army to retreat first (one shed equals thirty Li). If I can't get your forgiveness, I will fight with you again. "
Four years later, Chong'er really returned to the state of Jin and became the monarch, the famous Duke Wen of Jin in history. The state of Jin became more and more powerful under his administration.
In 633 BC, the armies of Chu and Jin met in battle. In order to fulfill his promise, Duke Wen of Jin ordered the army to retreat 90 Li and stay in Chengpu. Seeing that Jin army retreated, Chu Army thought that the other party was afraid and pursued immediately. Taking advantage of the weakness of the Chu army, the Jin army concentrated its forces to defeat the Chu army and won the battle of Chengpu.
