Puyuan (748-834), a native of Xinzheng, Henan Province, has a common surname of Wang. He became a monk in Mi County in the second year of Zhide (757) of the Tang Dynasty. He was ordained in Song Mountain in the twelfth year of Dali (777) of Daizong. Later, he became a famous Zen master by following Mazu Daoyi of huairang of Nanyue family. In 795, Puyuan lived in seclusion in Nanquan courtyard of Chizhou. He never went down the mountain for 30 years. He was known as Nanquan Zen master and teacher Wang. Pu yuanneng was good at writing poems and writing, and he was also good at saying warning words to enlighten later generations. In the eighth year of Dahe (834), Pu was willing to sit in the Nanquan courtyard, and his verse was included in the complete collection of Tang poetry.

Puyuan, a Zen monk in Tang Dynasty. A disciple of Mazu Daoyi. According to volume 11 of biography of song eminent monks and volume 8 of biography of lanterns in Jingde, the common surname is Wang. Zhengzhou Xinzheng (now Henan Xinzheng) people. When he was ten years old, he was Zen master Dahui, and when he was thirty years old, he was a lawyer of Huishan temple in Songshan. He first studied the Xiangbu law school created by fali, and then listened to the classics such as Lengjia and Huayan, and understood the profound meanings such as Zhonglun, Bailun and twelve menlun. He also visited Mazu Daoyi in Jiangxi Province, and suddenly forgot to be free. In the 11th year of Zhenyuan (795), a Buddhist temple was established in Nanquan mountain, Chizhou (now Guichi, Anhui Province). The temple was self-sufficient and could not go down the mountain for 30 years. It is called "Nanquan Puyuan" in the world. In the early days of Dahe (827), at the request of the monks and the common people, they went down the mountain. Since then, there have been hundreds of apprentices. Together with Baizhang Huaihai and Xitang zhizang, they are called the "three great masters" of Mazu Daoyi. There are 17 legal heirs, among whom are Zhao Zhou congzong, Zihu Lizhen, Changsha jingcen, Baima tanzhao, etc. His Zen emphasizes "the mind is Buddha" and "the ordinary mind is Tao", and advocates "not depending on one thing in the twelve seasons". Influenced deeply by Taoism of Laozi and Zhuangzi, he emphasized that all things are equal and that standing is true. It holds that "Tao does not belong to knowing or not knowing.". Knowing is delusion, not knowing is no memory. If it is true, it is just like being too empty and empty, how can it be strong in right and wrong? "So it is natural and unrestrained in style. He once said to the peony in front of the court: "when people saw this flower, it was like a dream." It means that those who have not yet learned the Tao see flowers as if they are in a dream, while those who have learned the Tao are integrated with flowers, regardless of each other. When Daoyi and the "three great men" under the gate were watching the moon, they asked, "what's the time like?" Puyuan just brushed his sleeve. Daoyi commented, "only Puyuan can surpass things." It means that it doesn't treat man and the moon in opposition, so it doesn't have any interference or artifice. There is a volume of Nanquan Puyuan Zen master's quotations.
