Fang LAN (1263-1339), a native of Puyang (today's Putian, Fujian Province), is a native of Shuyuan. He lived in seclusion in Wuzhong and taught his disciples to be self-sufficient. He didn't marry when he was young. He was comparable to Lin Hejing in Song Dynasty.
He died in the fifth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1339) at the age of 77. He likes to chant all his life, but he never does. Zhu Zemin said that he was "tired of the world in his prime, and had few confidants in his twilight days". In Yuanming, he praises Tao Yuanming and criticizes Ji Kang and Ruan Ji for escaping from the world, but not for their nature, so they can't forget the world and show his indifferent attitude towards the world. In fact, he can't completely forget the world. He praises Jing Ke's misfortune and reminisces of the past in Qiantang. He also feels that "the world is like hemp". Therefore, he is not an independent person. However, he was a real hermit after all, so his poems were very quiet, such as "sitting on a night in early autumn". At the end of the poem, "the world is tired, and the fairyland never leaves the house", with a Zen of quiet nature. As a result of his serious attitude towards poetry writing, there are often warnings in his poems. Gu Sili once picked up his five character couplets, saying that "all of them come from painstaking chanting.". His poems are mainly composed of five characters, often expressing his feelings for the world at the end of the poem. The content of his poems is not rich enough. His friend fan Shikuan Zihou once recorded a number of his five character poems, which were compiled into the volume of Fang Shuyuan's manuscript. There are only 45 poems left, and Gu Sili selected 15 poems, which are entitled "Shuyuan's manuscript". His life story can be seen in volume 10 of Wu Zhong Zhi Ren Zhi and biography of Yuan Shi Xuan Chu Ji.
