He took part in the revolutionary work in 1948, and was the art team leader of the third corps of the second field army the next year. In 2000, Sichuan Province awarded him the title of "both virtuous and artistic" artist. In the aspect of art, he has a wide range of interests. He attaches importance to tradition rather than antiquity. He can resonate with the times instead of pursuing the new. When he was young, he began to study western painting. Some of his works, such as "on the grassland", "song fenghan", "Yi area alliance", "Wanyuan defense war" (cooperation), were selected into the national and military art exhibitions. After the 1980s, he turned to Chinese painting. Most of his works are based on life, and they use traditional brush and ink. Sometimes they use micro drawing, sometimes they use pen to express themselves. The mountains and rivers, whether they are majestic peaks, cliffs or wild water in mountain villages, often exude a quiet interest, which makes people feel like wandering in the dust. His calligraphy has a unique style. For seal script, di script, Kai script, Xing script and Cao script, he can find a new way and have his own style. His works are either strong and simple, or elegant, open but not wild, astringent but not stagnant. He once attended the first national Calligrapher's Congress, and his works were selected into the second and third national calligraphy exhibitions, the first army calligraphy exhibition and other large-scale exhibitions. In 1987, he participated in the Sichuan calligraphy delegation's visit to Japan and held the "four person calligraphy exhibition" and the "calligraphy exhibition of friendly calligraphers on the 15th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Japan". In 1991, he visited Japan on invitation and held an exhibition of Fang Zhen's calligraphy, painting and seal cutting.
