Zhang ruotan was born in Tongcheng County of Anhui Province in Qing Dynasty.

Zhang ruotan was born in the Zhang family of Tongcheng, and his family background is prominent. His grandfather Zhang Ying and Uncle Zhang Tingyu are both officials and undergraduates. His father, Zhang Tingfu, was Zhang Ying's fourth son. In the first year of Qianlong (1736), ruotan was a top three Jinshi of Bingchen family. In the ninth year of Qianlong (1744), he was granted a review. He is the author of yuanfengting poetry anthology.
