Profile
Zhang Tai (1435-1508), named Shuheng, was born in Chencun, Shunde County, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. He worked in agriculture for generations, and his father began to study as an official. Zhang Tai was a mellow man since he was a child. He often helped his mother and son, who were bullied by his biological mother. When they separated, he even cried to persuade his mother to write poems fairly. He was elected in 1458 (the fourth year of Jingtai) and became a Jinshi in 1466 (the second year of Chengren). He successively served as county magistrate, censor, xunjiao, Shaoqing, vice censor, youshilang and Minister of nanhubu. He was the first minister after Shunde was founded.
Life experience
When he first served as the magistrate of Shaxian County in Fujian Province, Deng Maoqi, the "king of shoveling" uprising, was just suppressed. The countryside of the whole county was withered, and the commerce and trade were decadent. People fled for their lives and looked up in desolation. Zhang Tai did not seek refuge. He made a series of measures to ease people's livelihood, including tax and rent exemption, lenient administration and support for the people, which attracted the people who went out to make a living to return home, set up sheds to build communities, plough in the morning and rest in the evening, gradually heard about chickens and dogs, green seedlings in the spring, and fruit in the autumn. After taking the post of censor of supervision, Zhang Tai did not deliberately avoid contradictions in the face of the increasingly corrupt government and the tangled officialdom, but directly faced the treacherous and sycophantic, which is admirable. When he inspected Tongzhou, he found that there were many drawbacks in the official warehouse, involving a wide range of people, and most of them were mysterious and unfathomable. However, he dealt with them impartially, followed the plan, and finally cleaned up the old disadvantages, which was applauded. The eunuchs Qian Neng and Qin Qin colluded with wanguifei to do the opposite, to point deer as horses, to cause trouble, to attract soldiers, and to search for civilian fat. People dare to be angry and keep their mouths shut. Zhang Tai found out and investigated in secret. Later, he joined with the censor to impeach him. He tried to reprimand Princess Wan and severely punish Qian Neng and Qin Qin. However, because Princess Wan was favored by the emperor, Zhang Tailong stroked his beard, which made the emperor furious. He was severely injured by the Imperial Staff and later released to the capital for academic politics. Soon after his mother died, Zhang Tai took advantage of this opportunity to stay away from the capital and stay in the countryside for ten years. In 1492, at the age of 57, Zhang Tai returned to the countryside and served as a patrol post in Yunnan. As straight as ever, as soon as he took office, he punished corruption, denounced corruption, impeached dereliction of duty, mediated disputes, built levees and dams, promoted national integration, guaranteed the peace of residents, and was welcomed by the people. Later, when there was a riot in Gansu Province, local officials tried to pass the buck to each other. Zhang Tai was ordered to go west to investigate. He tried to get rid of the resistance and made an in-depth investigation. He found that Fu De, the eunuch in charge, was in trouble. He colluded with the commander in chief, occupied the garrison land, withheld military salaries, concealed the death of soldiers, and did not report the loss of horses. Zhang Tai dealt with it impartially and severely punished lawlessness. Zhang Tai also contributed to the recovery of the ranch occupied by eunuchs and frontier generals. However, he was impeached and slandered because of "making trouble", which made the emperor look at him and fined him half a year's salary. After that, Zhang Tai was appointed Shaoqing of Dali temple, and was ordered to investigate the fact that Suzhou government occupied mintian as a pasture. Zhang Tai is well aware that the undercurrent is surging. If he is not careful, the consequences will be unimaginable. Therefore, he secretly checked and collated the books of farmland in those years one by one, and confirmed that the farmland should be returned to the people was more than 930 hectares. Later, he found out the number of land lost one by one. However, after the restoration of his life, he was confronted with many difficulties and different opinions, which made the result of the investigation uncertain. It was not until the new emperor ascended the throne that the imperial court made a correct decision based on the results of Zhang Tai's investigation. In 1507 (the third year of Zhengde), Zhang Tai changed his official position to the censor of the right capital of Nanjing. At that time, Liu Jin, a eunuch, was in power, and officials of different sizes were competing for bribes. Zhang Tai disdained to flatter, only when he came to Beijing to play, he brought two pieces of Ge BU for a courtesy visit. Liu Jin held a grudge and withheld hundreds of stone salaries from Zhang Tai. However, Zhang Tai was promoted to minister of the Ministry of household affairs in Nanjing because of his diligence and loyalty for many years. However, Liu Jin's slander made Zhang Tai lose his official position. Seeing this, Zhang Tai was helpless, so he resigned and returned home, and died the next year.
