Xia og, also known as Gongyou, was born in Yuezhou (now Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province) in Song Dynasty. He was an official of observation and promotion in Mingzhou (now Ningbo, Zhejiang Province). In the second year of Jiayou's reign (1057), he became a talented person, and was also a member of the sports department of Maoming. Later, in Changzhou county (a county of Suzhou), he was demoted in 1061 by private loan.

Wen Yanbo cherishes it and plays back the official. People think it is worthy of tutoring. Wang Kui's biography is included in the second volume of Xinji of zuiwangtanlu. Later generations adapted the story into drama and so on.
