Yu Xingzong, whose year of birth and death is unknown, was born in Gaoling (now in Sanyuan County, Shaanxi Province) in the Tang Dynasty, and his nephew Yu.

In 826, Jingzong was the magistrate of Dongyang county. Around 853, Xuanzong was appointed the governor of mianzhou by Zhongcheng, the censor of Xuanzong. Later, he was transferred to Yangzhou, where he became the governor of Shaoyin. Xingzongneng's poems were well connected with poets of that time, such as Liu Yuxi, Fang Gan, Li Peng and Li Wenru. When he was the governor of mianzhou, he once ascended the building of the king of Yue and wrote poems to send to his friends in the court. At that time, more than ten scholars, such as Li Peng, Yang Lao, Xue Meng, Li Ye and so on, wrote poems together. His deeds can be seen in Liu Yuxi's "reply to Dongyang's cold and Bitu poem", "new book of the Tang Dynasty · prime minister's genealogy Table II", "chronicle of Tang poetry" Volume 53. There are two poems in Quan Tang Shi. Among them, "Dongyang Hanbi Pavilion" is actually the first four sentences of Fang Gan's "Hanbi Pavilion".
