Wu Xi, whose name is Xuan, was born in Tongcheng, Anhui Province. Ming Zhengde 16 years (1521) Jinshi. Wu Xi was eccentric and didn't want to add trouble to others. When he buried his father, he ran into a snowstorm and stopped by his friend Fang Qubing's door. At night, he sat on the stone pier in front of Fang's door and left at dawn. When he was appointed as a pusher in Xiangyang, he judged the cases fairly and selflessly, and had a high reputation for relieving the starving people.

When the imperial court was ready to appoint a post, Wu Xi said: "according to the national law, you can get a promotion of more than 200 of the enemy's first rank. If Jiang cuts the enemy less than 80, you can get a reward, but you can't get a promotion." Zhang Zan, the minister, was impressed by Wu Xi's upright behavior. When Wu Zongci was in the palace, Liu, a former official, was the commander of the royal guards. Liu Minyu, his son, wanted to inherit his father's position. Zhang Zanli, the Secretary of state, invited him. Wu Xi strongly opposed it and wrote a letter to Zhang Zan, saying that according to the rules of the court, people without military merit can not be hereditary. People's reputation has no military merit, so it can't be inherited. Zhang Zan was very angry. He tore up the letter and threw it on the ground. He wrote back and said, "I must do it for Liu Minyu." Wu Xi retorted: "Liu Minyu has violated the rules of the court, and I must intervene to the end!" Wu Xi later served as a counsellor of Huguang, and then as a deputy envoy of Shandong and Yunnan.
