Liu Dashen (1747-1828), whose name is Ji'an, was born in Linchuan, Jiangxi Province. His great grandfather was born in Huaning County, Yunnan Province. Liu Dashen was a learned scholar. He was not only a famous official of that time, but also a famous teacher of that generation. Many of the scholars and cultural celebrities in Central Yunnan came from his family.

Character experience

Liu Dashan was born in a scholarly family for generations, and his ancestors had a good reputation of "literary name in the state, and straight voice in the Lu". He received a good family education since childhood, so he has a deep foundation in poetry, books and articles. In the 37th year of Qianlong reign of Qing Dynasty (1772), he was awarded the county magistrate of Xincheng, Shandong Province. Later, he moved to Wendeng, Chaocheng county magistrate and Tongzhi of Wuding, Yunnan Province. He has been a junior official of seven grades for more than ten years. Because of his integrity, concern and sympathy for the suffering of the people, he is deeply loved by the people. In 1805, when the great gentry resigned as his mother and returned to ningzhou, Zhang Wanling, a native of Xincheng County in Shandong Province, invited someone to make a set of 19 pictures of his last love, depicting the deeds of the great gentry in all parts of Shandong Province to express his yearning for him. For this reason, the draft of the history of Qing Dynasty specially set up a biography for him. When Liu Dashen returned to Huaning, he saw that there might be a green dragon pond five miles to the west of the city. He built his own thatched cottage in the west of the pond, named it "Tanxi thatched cottage" and named himself "Tanxi old man". In 1813, Bo Lin, the governor of Yunnan and Guizhou, admired his reputation and hired Liu Dashen to be the head of Wuhua academy, the highest University in Yunnan. It is said that before that, the person who served as the head of the mountain had to be a Hanlin to be qualified. Although he was a Jinshi, he never entered the Imperial Academy. As a result, some frivolous scholars tried to test whether he was really talented and learned. They took advantage of the opportunity to invite dozens of people to write congratulatory couplets. Unexpectedly, Liu Dashen was erudite and talented. He wrote dozens of couplets in one breath. The couplets were beautiful, elegant and interesting. It was amazing!

Term of office

During his long term in Wuhua academy, Liu Dashen took cultivating talents for governing the country as his duty. At that time, the students only wanted to cope with the imperial examination, not to achieve real talent and practical learning. He taught the students with classics, history, poetry and prose. He also personally taught the students and revised the poetry and prose, which greatly changed the style of study and made indelible contributions to the education in Yunnan and Kunming. Under his cultivation and influence, the students made great progress. Among them, Yang guohan from Linchuan, Taihe (DALI), Dai Chun from Chenggong, Dai jiongsun from Kunming and Chi Chunsheng from Chuxiong, who lived in Xiangyun, are the most outstanding, and are known as the "five sons of Wuhua". The great gentry personally selected and ordered a collection of poems for them and wrote a preface, which was named "Selected Poems of Wuhua and Wuzi". Although Liu Dashen had great attainments and achievements in poetry, he was never complacent and remained modest in his later years! I have been learning poetry for forty years! There is no poet to speak of. His works include "Ji'an Wenchao" and "Ji'an Shichao" in 20 volumes, and more than 2500 pieces were selected and engraved during his lifetime. His article, the draft of the history of the Qing Dynasty, contains the biography of yaxiaozi. During the Anti Japanese War, Zhengzhong Publishing House selected his biography of yaxiaozi and postscript of seeing peach blossom in the southeast mountain as the required reading texts, which were well received by scholars and young students at that time.
