Character Poems
Wu Huizhi was intelligent and studious when he was young. He also liked to travel and live a free life. His talent and hobby for poetry and the beautiful scenery of nature in Ningguo made him an outstanding poet of his generation. Wu Huizhi's poems are simple and unadorned. They are good at capturing the details of nature and infusing his own emotions into them, with a strong rural flavor. For example, his poem "just in time in spring" wrote: "when there is nothing to do in the mountain, the gate of firewood has not been opened yet. With the sound of birds singing, the spring day is still, and the wind from the partition wall brings flowers. Another example is the poem "looking for plum blossoms after snow", which says: there are two or three bamboo fences and thatched cottages along the slanting path of the bridge. The red plum seems to have an appointment with the poet, and the wax snow begins to disappear. He loved plum blossoms very much. He named his residence on Maoshan mountain of qianqiuling "shengxiangting", surrounded by plum blossoms, imitating the home of Lin Bu, a hermit and poet of the Northern Song Dynasty, in Gushan, West Lake, Hangzhou.
Living in seclusion in mountain forest
Although Wu Huizhi lived in seclusion in the mountains, his character and talent were still known by the outside world. Xu Yi, a Wenzhou official who was once the magistrate of Hangzhou and later the Minister of the Ministry of official affairs, was honest and upright. He often had poetry and letters with Wu Huizhi and knew him well. At that time, Xi Shixun, an official of Ningguo who was the Minister of Dali temple, was Wu Huizhi's poetry friend and fellow townsman. They all recommended Wu Huizhi to the imperial court to be an official and got the emperor's permission. First, Xu Yi wrote to Wu Huizhi to test his attitude. Xu Yi highly praised Wu Huizhi's talent and character in his letter, and explained that the political situation had not been consolidated since the Song Dynasty's southward migration, and the imperial court was in great need of all kinds of talents. He hoped that Wu Huizhi could become an official and contribute to the country and the people. After Wu Huizhi received Xu Yi's letter, he knew that his old friend was good for him, so he recommended him to be an official in the imperial court. At the same time, he also knew that officialdom was a dangerous place. He was used to the free pastoral life and had no interest in being an official. Therefore, he wrote a poem in reply to Xu Yi to express his feelings. The poem says: "Xie Shilang wrote to Xiangmian, and he has built a thatched cottage in the Nanshan Mountain. He has closed his house and cherished the world. Even though there is no dust, only the devil of poetry has not been swept away. When gulls and herons come and go, they know that birds are unique. When the storm is quiet, the boat is empty. What's the use of the savage's self-determination? I'm ashamed to humiliate you. Wu Huizhi refused the recommendation of being an official, still lived a quiet, elegant and free pastoral life in his thatched cottage, and continued to devote himself to writing poems. Although he has no achievement in fame, his achievements in literature are remarkable. His poems are as passionate as Li Bai's, and his language is bright and beautiful as Wang Wei's, which is admired by later generations. The collection of poems is named "the collection of chewing wax".
