Wu Guang (1904-1977) was born in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. He graduated from the school of science of Soochow University in 1927. In the 19th year of the Republic of China, he went to the University of Michigan to study parasitology and obtained a Ph.D. degree. He was also admitted as a member of the American Society of Parasitology and microbiology. He returned to China in the 22nd year of the Republic of China and served as professor of Agricultural College of Sun Yat sen University, director of Zhejiang provincial parasitic disease control station, technical director of Nanjing Central Experimental Institute of health, researcher of Shanghai leishide Medical Research Institute and professor of Shanghai Medical College. After liberation, he successively served as professor of Shanghai First Medical College, researcher and director of Parasitology Department of Academy of Military Medical Sciences, chairman of national schistosomiasis research committee, researcher of Institute of parasitic diseases of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, and director of Shanghai livestock schistosomiasis research office of Ministry of agriculture.
Wu Guang is a famous parasitologist in China. He has been engaged in the study of morphology, taxonomy and life history of Schistosoma and Paragonimus for a long time. He has a deep knowledge of the skin spines of Paragonimus for classification and host protection. He has published 35 academic papers, which has a high theoretical level and practical value. In 1951, Wu Guang formulated a complete set of clinical drug screening experimental procedures, and conducted a systematic study on the host of schistosomiasis. It was found that about 10 species of wild animals were naturally infected, which further confirmed the relationship with human diseases and had a certain value in the epidemiology and prevention of schistosomiasis. During the period of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, he led a voluntary inspection team to investigate the prevalence of paragonimiasis in Korea and put forward prevention and control measures, which was awarded by the Ministry of health. In 1956, cercariae similar to Schistosoma japonicum was found in black snails in Yunnan, Sichuan and Guangxi. He went deep into his brother nationality areas to investigate, and carried out a large number of experimental studies. It was confirmed that this cercariae was a kind of rat schistosome and had nothing to do with human schistosome. In more than 10 years, 18 academic reports were put forward, including the relationship between animal schistosomiasis and human, the morphology of Paragonimus, the investigation methods of cercariae, and the prevention of schistosomiasis. Due to Wu Guang's outstanding contribution in schistosomiasis control, he was received by Chairman Mao Zedong of the CPC Central Committee in 1956.
