Yan Xiong, originally known as Zhuang Xiong PI, was renamed Yan surname because he avoided the taboo of Liu Zhuang, the Ming emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was born in the time of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty. He wrote a letter to Emperor Wu, proposing to build a canal to irrigate more than ten thousand hectares of dry land in Pucheng and Dali of Shaanxi Province.

Because the soil in shangyanshan is loose and the Bank of the canal is easy to collapse, the migrant workers created the "well and canal method" to connect the underground with water.
