Li Shutao (1827-1865) was born in Zunyi County, Guizhou Province. He lost his father at the age of 16 and led his younger brothers to school. In the first year of Xianfeng in the Qing Dynasty (1851 AD), because of illness, they did not take part in the examination. They devoted themselves to poetry creation to express their depressed thoughts. He successively applied for lecturing in Xiangchuan, Yucai and Peiying academies, spread Li's learning, and cultivated a group of talents such as Huan maoyong.
Tongzhi four years (AD 1865) died in Yumen village, only 39 years old. His works include three volumes of Mu Geng Cao Tang Shi Chao, four volumes of Yi Yan Zhai Shi Chao, two volumes of Qin Zhou Ci and one volume of Xiao Ting Za Wen. He is also good at painting and calligraphy and is good at landscape.
