Shi Mao, whose year of birth and death is unknown, was born in Wuhu County (now Anhui Province) and the grandson of Shi Yuqin. Shi's father, Shi Touji (Xingzong), once served as a county captain in Pengze County, Jiangxi Province. He built a study rock for his three sons (Mao, Ping, and youyou). Later Huang Tingjian came to write this inscription, which he praised as "three shaos in orange forest".

Shi Mao's existing poems are all near body, seven and seven, and most of them are works of chanting things. The Quju is selected by Chen Yan as the essence of Song poetry. The poem uses synaesthesia, metaphor and other artistic techniques to express his nostalgia for his official career. In addition, Shi Mao's chanting poems, such as snow, plum blossom, qianjinhua and Tumi, are all included in ancient and modern Shiwen leiju, ancient and modern Hebi Shilei BeiYao, Quanfang Beizu and Jinxiu wanhuagu, which shows the great influence.
In terms of style, Shi Mao's poems tend to be "pure and easy" (Zhu Mu's Shi Wen Lei Ju and Xie Weixin's Shi Lei Bei Yao). He often chooses the Pearl curtain, water moon, orchid, jade flute and so on as the poetic images, which are fresh and fluent, without the feeling of obscurity, difficulty and embarrassment. There are also some poems that are bold and elegant, such as "the wind and cloud is about a thousand silk rain, the sky and the earth are empty without any dust" (snow), "Shouyu Zhulian qianaxifu, hetaijing baichuankong" (birthday) and "Yannan snowflake is bigger than palm, icicle overhanging eaves is a thousand feet" (yongxue), all of which are full of romanticism with exaggerated imagination. It is no wonder that Huang Tingjian wrote a poem: "it is like a banished immortal, but he owes wine, and his love is like Song Yu, even in autumn. The only way to win is to see the moon and the river flowing. " Comparing Shi Mao's talent with Li Bai and Song Yu and positively affirming them, we can see that Gu Gu highly respects him. Li Bai, as a model of poetry, has been sought after and imitated by later generations. In the Song Dynasty, many poets had an indissoluble bond with Li Bai. Great poets such as Guo Xiangzheng enjoyed the reputation of "Taibai's successor", Lu You also enjoyed the reputation of "little Taibai", and Shi Mao's reputation of "just like a banished immortal" was rare.
