Wang Hongzhuan

Wang Hong (1622-1702) was a famous scholar in Guanzhong of Qing Dynasty, who was born in Huayin County of Shaanxi Province.

brief account of the author's life

He studied in Nanjing with his father when he was young. He was smart and diligent. He had copied Zuozhuan, Shiji, Hanshu and poems of all dynasties by hand. In the early years of Shunzhi, he traveled to the south of the Yangtze River and made friends with famous people. Later, at the invitation of Jia Hanfu, he participated in the compilation of Shaanxi Tongzhi. At that time, he had many contacts with famous scholars in Guanzhong, such as Li temporal, Li Yindu, and Li Kai. He lived in seclusion in the hut at the foot of Huashan Mountain and studied Cheng Zhu's Neo Confucianism and Zhang Zai's Guanxue theory. He advocated that the study of learning should be calm, that storytellers should be realistic, that they should not cover up their faults to those they respect most, and that they should not neglect their strengths to those they oppose. In 1678, he traveled north to Yan'an and wrote the article "Yan'an tuntian Yi". He advocated that the garrison in Suiyan area should be allowed to tuntian, reclaim wasteland and plant grain, which can not only supplement the shortage of military pay, but also solve the shortage of food. In another article, Yan'an textile discussion, he said that the price of cloth in Yan'an is several times higher than that in Xi'an, the people live in poverty, and the national tax revenue is decreasing day by day, because the local women can't spin. He advocated that the government should send textile machinery to the people in Yan'an, recruit textile experts from Guanzhong to teach technology, and help Yan'an develop its textile industry. In the 18th year of Emperor Kangxi, he was called to the capital, but he did not take part in the imperial examination because of illness. He lived in Wutian temple. Many officials and dignitaries asked him for articles. Famous scholars such as Wang Shizhen, Wang Wan and Shi Runzhang visited his residence and made friends with him. After that, he wandered south of the Yangtze River again for 10 years and returned to his hometown because of old age and illness. Kangxi 41 years (1702) died at home, at the age of 81. Wang Hongzhuan had no intention of official career in his whole life and devoted himself to his studies. Gu Yanwu praised him for his tireless study. He is good at ancient prose and has a profound charm. Besides, he also wrote many inscriptions in Guanzhong, imitating Wang Xizhi, Yan Zhenqing and Mi Fu. His works include 12 volumes of Dizhai collection, 8 volumes of divination in the book of changes, 1 volume of Zhengxue chanjian Shu and 6 volumes of mountain records.
