He graduated from Shanghai University of foreign languages in 1977 and has been teaching since then. In 1982, he received a scholarship from the United Nations development program to study TESL in the United States. The next year, he received a master of Science degree from the State University of New York at Albany. In 1990, he went to Indiana University of Pennsylvania to study for a doctor's degree in Linguistics and rhetoric. In 1994, he received a doctor's degree in philosophy.
