Du Zhi
Du Zhi (the year of his birth and death is unknown), a minister of Qin State in the Warring States period, once made great contributions to Wei. He was also a representative of the conservative school of Qin state.
In the third year of emperor Xiaogong of Qin Dynasty (359 BC), when Emperor Xiaogong of Qin appointed Shang Yang to prepare for the reform, Gan long and Du Zhi stood up against the reform.
Life of the characters
Gan long and Du Zhi believed that the benefits are not easy to change, and the achievements are not easy to implement. "There is no fault in legalism, and there is no evil in following rites."
Shang Yang pointed out in a tit for tat manner: "what is the ancient method for different religions in previous generations? If the emperor does not reply, what is the rule of etiquette? " "If there is no way to govern the world, the country will not follow the law of the ancient times. Therefore, Tang Wu did not follow the rites, and Xia and Yin did not perish easily. Those who oppose the ancients can not be denied, while those who follow the rites are not enough. " Therefore, he advocated "legislating at that time and making rites according to events" (gengfa chapter of Shangjun book and biographies of Shangjun in historical records).
This is a refutation of the idea of historical evolution of the old aristocracy's so-called "legalism" and "following the rites" to restore the ancients, which prepared the public opinion for the implementation of the reform. The illustration of "Shang Yang's war of words" in the textbook is a reflection of the great debate at that time.
