Life of the characters
Li Kai, who won the examination in 1624, gave up his plan to be an official and studied history at home.
After the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, he was appointed magistrate of Baoying county (now Baoying County, Jiangsu Province). At that time, Baoying was subordinate to Huai'an Prefecture. He proposed to change it to Yangzhou prefecture to save nearly ten thousand taels of silver in the cost of releasing farmland taxes, grain and grass every year. While dealing with government affairs, he visited ancient China and gathered scholars to write poems. Later, he was dismissed for some reason, that is, he traveled in Jiangnan. During this period, he lived in Guangling (now Jiangdu County, Jiangsu Province) for the longest time, and made extensive contacts with Jiangnan celebrities for more than 20 years.

Li Kai's works are very rich, and his son Li Jian has selected and compiled 100 volumes of riverside complete book. There are "selected poems by riverside", "selected works by riverside" and "a copy of riverside's posthumous notes". He is also good at calligraphy and painting.

Li Kai and Li Mingrui of Jiangxi Province once co authored Er Li Jue Shu. In his later years, he returned to his hometown and was compiling Shaanxi Tongzhi. Li Kai applied to participate in the compilation of annals and wrote 32 volumes. Later, he wrote 4 volumes of Chaoyi county annals and 2 volumes of Luochuan County annals.
