Memorial Hall
The former residence, with a total area of more than 740 square meters and five rooms, was demolished in 2000 when Xueqian street was widened. In 2004, the restoration and protection project of Gu Yuxiu's former residence was officially launched. The reconstructed Memorial covers an area of 968 square meters and a building area of 848 square meters. It retains the typical architectural style of Jiangnan folk houses and has five rooms and four entrances. The memorial describes in detail the moving legend of Gu Yuxiu, an academic master, from his life introduction, a science and education champion, a great writer, a road to success, and a deep patriotism. It vividly shows his advanced attainments and outstanding achievements in physics, culture and art, teaching and educating people, and fully embodies the cultural characteristics of Wuxi Zhongling Yuxiu and his emphasis on culture and education Humanistic spirit.
Gu's family was originally from Kunshan. In the middle of Ming Dynasty, because of Zhou Shunchang's case, he abandoned his family and changed his name to escape to Wuxi. He rented his home in dingjiangli, Ronghu village. During the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, Fang bought land and built houses in Hongqiao Bay, southwest of Wuxi City (the south side of the east end of today's Xueqian street is adjacent to Zhongshan Road and Yuyan Lane). At that time, there were three halls, vishan, Yanyu and Qinren, and Gu Yuxiu's branch lived in Yanyu hall.
In this former residence, five brothers, Gu Yuqi (Ph.D., University of Hamburg, Germany), Gu Yuxiu (Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of technology, USA), Gu Yulin (Ph.D., Cornell University, USA), Gu Yuzhen (Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of technology, USA) and Gu Yurui (Ph.D., Taiwan Culture University, USA), were born. The "five doctors in one discipline" of the Gu family is well-known in Wuxi.
In 1988, in memory of her mother Wang Jingsu, Gu Yuxiu changed the name of her residence to Songfen hall. In 2002, Gu Weiqing, the second son of Gu Yuxiu, donated the ancestral house to Wuxi Municipal People's Government on behalf of the Gu family. In 2003, Gu Yuxiu's former residence was declared as a cultural relic protection unit of Wuxi City by Wuxi Municipal People's government. On October 13, 2004, with the approval of the general office of the CPC Central Committee, it was rebuilt as "Gu Yuxiu Memorial Hall". On December 13 of the same year, Comrade Jiang Zemin inscribed the name of the memorial hall.

Gu Yuxiu was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province in 1902. In 1915, he was sent to Tsinghua School by his father. After studying hard for eight years, he went to Massachusetts Institute of technology to study electrical engineering in 1923. In 1925, he got his bachelor's degree. In February 1926, his article "general solution of quartic equation" attracted the attention of the college. In the same year, he got his master's degree in electrical engineering. In 1928, he got his doctor's degree in science. Gu Yuxiu is the first Chinese scholar to obtain a doctorate in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University. After returning to China in 1929, Gu Yuxiu has been engaged in electrical engineering teaching and educational administration in China for more than 20 years. He served as Professor, department head, Dean and President of many famous universities at that time. For example, he once served as president of Central University, President of China University of political science and vice minister of the Ministry of education. In the 1950s, he worked as a professor at Massachusetts Institute of technology and later settled in the United States. From 1926 to 1961, Gu Yuxiu published 60 academic papers. Due to his outstanding contribution to the theory of electrical machinery, he won the "Blue Gold Award" in 1972. During the half century from 1946 to 1996, he was elected as the honorary director of international applied mechanics every year. He is a famous scientist at home and abroad. Gu Yuxiu is one of the founders of China Electrical machinery society. He is an internationally recognized authority of electrical machinery and a pioneer of modern automatic control theory. He was a senior academician of American Society of electrical and electronic engineers before his death. He was awarded the "lamb" gold medal, Millennium medal and outstanding contribution award by the society. Gu Yuxiu is also a master of Arts and science who is a scientist, educator, poet, dramatist, musician and Buddhist. As an educator, he is one of the founders of the Institute of technology and the Department of electrical engineering of Tsinghua University. He once served as president of Central University, President of National Chengchi University, and vice president of the Ministry of education. Jiang Zemin and Qian Weichang were his students. As a poet, he wrote more than 7000 poems in his life, and was the "laureate poet" crowned by the world poets Congress. As a dramatist, he is a modern Chinese poet As a musician, he was the first president of the National Conservatory of music (now the predecessor of the Central Conservatory of Music), the maker of Chinese Huangzhong standard sound, and the authority of Chinese ancient music research. As a Buddhist, he is a great master of English The history of Zen and many monographs on Buddhist studies are highly valued by International Buddhist circles.
