Historical evolution
Preparatory stage
In 1958, the state began to prepare for the construction of the "Central Science Museum" (the predecessor of the China Science and Technology Museum). With the approval of Premier Zhou Enlai and vice premier Nie Rongzhen, the construction of the Science Museum has been listed as one of the ten capital projects for the 10th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China. The design scheme presided over by Professor Liang Sicheng of Tsinghua University and the location of Beijing International Hotel has been selected as the site of the museum. Later, due to the shortage of funds and materials, in order to make way for the Great Hall of the people and other projects, the central government decided to stop the construction of the science museum.
At the National Science Conference held in 1978, a group of veteran scientists, including Professor Mao Yisheng and Professor Qian Xuesen, once again proposed to the central government the construction of the China Science and Technology Museum. The State Planning Commission approved the construction of the China Science and Technology Museum on February 21, 1979. According to the plan of the State Development Planning Commission, the construction of the China Science and Technology Museum was originally planned to start in 1981, but it was not included in the national "sixth five year plan" for some reasons, so the construction was postponed again.
In 1983, Professor Mao Yisheng and other famous scientists put forward a proposal to accelerate the construction of China Science and Technology Museum at the National People's Congress, which was strongly supported by Yao Yilin, Wan Li and other party and state leaders. In July, the State Planning Commission approved the preliminary design for the construction of the China Science and Technology Museum in two phases as one of the projects of the national "Seventh Five Year Plan". The major construction projects of the national "Seventh Five Year Plan" finally have a place for the China Science and Technology Museum. Since then, the China Science and Technology Museum has entered the stage of concrete implementation from the long preparation stage.
In November 1984, Deng Xiaoping personally wrote the name of the China Science and Technology Museum. On November 21 of the same year, the first phase of the China Science and Technology Museum project broke ground, and Yao Yilin personally cut the ribbon for the foundation laying ceremony.
Phase I Project
The first phase of the project is mainly composed of the comprehensive business building, the first phase exhibition hall and the dome cinema. After nearly four years of intensive construction, the comprehensive business building and the first phase exhibition hall were completed in August 1988 and officially opened to the public on September 22 of the same year.
The dome cinema started construction on May 17, 1989, completed in 1993, put into use in May 1994, and officially opened to the public in August 1995.
second-phase project
In March 1995, Xu Jialu and other 45 deputies to the National People's Congress and Gao Zhenning and other 27 members of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) put forward the proposal of "completing the construction of the main project of the China Science and Technology Museum by the end of this century" at the third session of the Eighth National People's Congress and the third session of the Eighth National Committee of the CPPCC.
In November 1996, the State Planning Commission approved the master plan for the expansion of 45000 square meters of China Science and Technology Museum on the basis of the first phase project. According to this plan, the project will be divided into two phases: phase II and phase III. after the completion of phase II, phase III will continue to be constructed. After the full completion of the China Science and Technology Museum, the total construction area will reach 65000 square meters, making it one of the science centers of the world's large science and technology museums.
After more than one year's preparatory work, the new exhibition hall, which was listed as the second phase of the capital Beijing celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China, broke ground on February 24, 1998. The new exhibition hall was completed on the eve of the National Day on September 17, 1999 and officially opened to the public on April 29, 2000.
In 2001, the China Science and Technology Museum invested a lot of money to transform the second and third floors of the first phase exhibition hall into a "children's Science Park" for a special group of children aged 3-10.
New library project
On June 12, 2002, Jia Qinglin, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party committee, Liu Qi, mayor of Beijing, and Zhou Guangzhao, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the China Association for science and technology, Zhang Yutai, vice chairman, Secretary of the Party group and first Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for science and technology, and Xu Shanyan, vice chairman and Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for science and technology, held a meeting on the construction of the third phase of the China Science and Technology Museum After the discussion, it was agreed that the new construction plan of China Science and Technology Museum in the Olympic Park should be adopted. This arrangement was finally recognized and agreed by the State Planning Commission, and the "third phase project of China Science and Technology Museum" was renamed "construction project of China Science and Technology Museum".
On August 27, 2002, the China Association for science and technology and the Beijing Municipal People's government reported to the State Planning Commission the "request for instructions on the site selection and construction of the new China Science and Technology Museum", suggesting that the third phase project of China Science and technology museum should be changed into the construction of a new one in the Olympic Park. It is suggested that the construction scale of the new museum should be 120000 square meters, the project construction investment should be 1.2 billion yuan, and the capital construction investment in the national budget should be 1:1 with that in Beijing.
On April 1, 2005, the national development and Reform Commission issued the reply of the national development and Reform Commission to the China Association for science and technology and the Beijing Municipal Development and Reform Commission on the project proposal of the new China Science and Technology Museum. So far, the construction of the new museum of China Science and Technology Museum has been officially approved in China.
On May 9, 2006, the foundation laying ceremony of the new China Science and Technology Museum was held.
On March 28, 2017, China Science and Technology Museum was selected as "the first batch of China's top ten science and technology tourism bases" by the National Tourism Administration and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
