Central door
The central gate, one of the new gates of the Ming city wall of Nanjing in the Republic of China, is located on the west side of Shence gate (Heping gate) in the Ming Dynasty. The gate is no longer in existence. The former site is now a transportation hub, and it is located at the intersection of four main roads, namely central road, North Central Road, Jianning road and Longpan road. The place name is still used today.
In 1931 (the 20th year of the Republic of China), the national government broke the wall and opened the way to the west of Shence gate at the intersection of Zhongyang Road and the Ming city wall of Nanjing, which was named Zhongyang gate. The central gate is about 500 meters west of Shence gate.
In 1957, the relevant departments of Nanjing Municipal People's government thought that the central gate had hindered the widening of the central road and should be removed immediately. After the relevant report was approved by the municipal government, the central door was completely removed.
In the 1980s, a three story interchange was built near the central gate. Now to the east of the central gate is Nanjing railway station. This area has also developed into the "third business district" in Nanjing.
introduce
After the national government established the capital of Nanjing in 1927, the construction of the capital was carried out rapidly. At that time, the city wall of Ming Dynasty divided Nanjing into the outer part of the city, which led to Yanziji, Xiaozhuang and other places in the north of the city. Only Shence gate was built in the early Ming Dynasty. With the development of urban construction, it is more and more necessary to open a door on the north facing wall to facilitate the people and ease the traffic. In 1928, the Nanjing municipal authorities determined the meridian position of Polaris and planned a "Meridian Road". Ziwu road starts from Gulou square in the South and ends at Ming City Wall in the north. In 1930, Ziwu road was built, and soon it was renamed Zhongyang Road. In 1931, the Municipal Department of Nanjing opened a new gate on the Ming city wall at the north end of Zhongyang Road. It was named Zhongyang gate with the word "Zhongyang" in Zhongyang Road. This gate is about 500 meters west of Shence gate. It is named after the road.
Architectural features
The central gate is a semicircular gate hole imitated the old Ming city wall gate, but it is much wider and higher than the Ming city wall gate hole, and there is a white jade gate forehead on the gate hole. The door can hold two or three cars passing side by side.
Demolition of city gate
According to the records of Nanjing city wall annals, on September 2, 1957, Nanjing Municipal Commission of cultural administration and Nanjing Municipal Bureau of urban construction jointly submitted the report on dismantling the city gate of the central gate, believing that the central gate hindered the widening project of the central road and should be removed immediately. At that time, the west side of the central gate had been demolished to 40 meters. After the report was approved, the central door was completely removed and disappeared.
If the central gate was demolished from 1931 to 1957, it only existed for 26 years at most. However, after it was demolished, the central gate remained as a place name, which refers to the central gate and large areas nearby. Later, with the completion of the bus station and the use of the central gate overpass, the central gate has become a household name in Nanjing, and its popularity has surpassed that of many old city gates.
development history
Central gate has been famous for wholesale and retail, transportation and distribution. Relying on railway stations, long-distance bus stations and shipping terminals, it radiates the Yangtze River Delta. With the daily flow of 300000 people and the annual turnover of 10 billion goods, the central gate has become a real wealth basin. Although it has such advantages, the central door has always been carrying the reputation of "dirty, messy and old", so upgrading is imminent.
Central gate is known as the "third business district" in Nanjing. The annual turnover of Jinqiao, Yuqiao and other major markets in the business district is nearly 10 billion yuan. However, compared with Xinjiekou, Hunan Road and other business districts, the traffic of Zhongyangmen business district is chaotic, the grade is low, the image is poor, and the support of large-scale and high-end businesses is lacking, so the overall business is not systematic.
In view of this situation, before the Youth Olympic Games, Xiaguan District government and relevant enterprises will jointly invest 3.88 billion yuan to upgrade the central gate area. Among them, 2.5 billion yuan was invested in the construction of commercial facilities, 1.23 billion yuan in road infrastructure, and 150 million yuan in river environment improvement and green space projects. The central gate business and trade cluster will be built into a highlight area of Xiaguan's industrial transformation and upgrading, a business center in the north of Nanjing and an important commodity distribution center in East China, highlighting leisure and business functions.
