Oriental Pearl TV Tower

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower (The Oriental Pearl Radio TV Tower) is one of the landmark cultural landscapes in Shanghai, located in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area, which is about 468 meters tall. The building was built in July 1991 and put into use in May 1995. It undertakes six sets of wireless TV transmitting services in Shanghai, covering a radius of 80 km.

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the first batch of AAAAA level scenic spots in the country. In 1995, it was listed as one of the top ten new landscapes in Shanghai.

On January 6, 2020, it will be selected as the top ten new landmark buildings in Shanghai in 2019.

Historical evolution

On August 25, 1983, Zou Fanyang, director of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of broadcasting, wrote letters to Wang Daohan, mayor, Ruan Chongwu, vice mayor, and leaders of the Ministry of radio and television of the people's Republic of China, proposing for the first time the idea of using foreign capital to build a new TV tower.

On March 25, 1984, Mayor Wang Daohan made a report on the work of the municipal government at the second session of the Eighth National People's Congress of Shanghai, formally proposing that a new TV transmission tower will be built in Shanghai.

In 1984, the Shanghai Municipal Commission of foreign trade and Economic Cooperation approved the proposal for Sino foreign cooperation in the construction and operation of a 400 meter radio and television tower. After repeated investigation and research, the new TV Tower is located in the area from Lujiazui to Pudong Park. On August 23, 1984, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of radio and television officially reported "opinions on the site selection of 400 meter TV transmitting tower".

Shanghai urban planning and construction administration has made a detailed demonstration on the specific location and planning of the new tower in Lujiazui. In March 1985, it submitted a report on the construction of a new radio and television tower over 400 meters and its ancillary facilities to the Shanghai municipal government, Wang Daohan, Ruan Chongwu, Liu Zhenyuan, Ni Tianzeng and other leaders. In May 1985, the municipal urban and rural construction planning committee approved the above report and agreed that the tower site should be located in Lujiazui, Pudong.

Since the second half of 1985, the application for project approval, feasibility study, scheme design and fund raising of the tower construction project have been carried out, and have received the attention and support of the relevant departments of the State Council, Shanghai municipal Party committee and Shanghai municipal government. In October 1986, the project proposal was completed and submitted to the State Planning Commission, and the building height was set at 450 meters. In January 1987, the State Planning Commission approved the project and agreed to include the tower construction project in Shanghai's "94" special project. In January 1988, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of radio and television submitted a feasibility report on the construction of a new radio and television tower, which was approved by the Shanghai Municipal Planning Commission in July 1988.

On March 4, 1989, at the enlarged meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai municipal committee chaired by Jiang Zemin, we discussed the decision to select the "Oriental Pearl" plan of East China Architectural Design Institute. The architectural conception and overall structure of the "Oriental Pearl" scheme were put forward and completed by architects Ling Benli and Jiang Huancheng respectively.

In July 30, 1991, the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was solemnly held.

In December 14, 1993, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was topping with a 350 meter stereo structure.

On May 1, 1994, the steel mast of the transmitting antenna was installed in place. On October 1, 1994, the decoration of the ground floor hall in the tower was completed, and the climbing sightseeing facilities and the main lighting system were put into operation.

In May 1, 1995, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was officially launched.

In 2004, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower carried out energy saving technological transformation of lighting equipment, and replaced the old light source with light-emitting diodes.

From November 2012 to January 2013, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower modified the capsule.

From September 2013 to January 2014, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower carried out facade cleaning and renovation, with an overall coating area of 23 thousand square meters.

building structure

The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is a multi tube structure. The main trunk is 3 hollow big sky columns with a diameter of 9 meters and 287 meters high. There is a cross beam with 6 meters high between the columns. At the height of 93 meters, it is supported by a diagonal column of 3 meters with a diameter of 7 meters, and the diagonal column is 60 degrees to the ground. The building has 425 foundation piles 12 meters into the ground, three steel structure spheres of over 1000 tons are suspended at the height of 112 meters, 295 meters and 350 meters respectively, and the reinforced concrete building is added with three diagonal braces nearly 100 meters high.

The TV tower has three spheres: bottom, top and top. The top ball is called the space hall. The center elevation is 342 meters, and the diameter of the ball is 16 meters. It has four floors, namely the elevator room, the conference hall, the sightseeing floor and the pipeline floor. According to different stress characteristics, the upper ball is a suspension structure, and the lower ball is a prestressed concrete shell. The diameter of the upper sphere is 45 meters, and the center elevation is 272.5 meters. There are 9 floors in total, including public equipment floor, frequency modulation room, cooling equipment floor, transmitter room, air KTV room, revolving restaurant, observation platform, microwave room, and upper sphere power transformation and distribution room. The diameter of the lower sphere is 50 meters, the center elevation is 93 meters, and there are four floors in total. As an indoor playground, the lower sphere power transformation and distribution room is set in the bowl shaped shell. The three vertical cylinders are connected by five beams to form five small balls. Each ball is about 12 meters in diameter and designed as a high-altitude hotel. The diameter of the tower base is 158.4 meters, with a total of three floors. The diameter of the central part is 60 meters. The two-story space is the lobby and elevator hall of the TV Tower.

It is surrounded by a 3-story tower with a shopping mall of nearly 20000 square meters. The first floor is surrounded by a 15 meter wide underground circular garage and VIP reception room. There are 6 escalators and 6 high-speed elevators in the tower, and the whole tower is covered by green roof and ring lane.

The structure scheme of hollow tube with diagonal bracing makes the TV Tower have good seismic and wind resistance performance. The seismic design standard is "no moving at level 7, no cracking at level 8 and no toppling at level 9". Among them, the subjects of "wind engineering test and research" and "earthquake engineering test and research" were identified by experts in 1993 and reached the international advanced level.

Sightseeing floor

The elevation of the outer light Gallery of the lower sphere room with a diameter of 50 meters is 90 meters. The diameter of the upper layer of the 263 meter sightseeing layer is 45 meters, which is the subjective light level of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.

The 259 meter suspended sightseeing gallery is 150 meters long and 2.1 meters wide,

It is transformed from the edge of the original second sphere sightseeing platform. The gallery is composed of 24 movable petal shaped toughened transparent laminated glass with a unit building area of 17.29 square meters.

The space capsule at 350 meters is 16 meters in diameter, showing the science fiction charm of space scenes in a futuristic style. It is the highest sightseeing floor of the TV Tower.

The Oriental rotary restaurant is located in the Pearl Tower 267 meters above the globe. Its business area is 1500 square meters. It can accommodate 350 tourists at the same time.

Exhibition Center

In May 2001, the 6000 square meter exhibition hall of Shanghai city history opened in the tower of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.

The exhibition hall reflects the development process of Shanghai through more than 80 scenic spots, hundreds of precious historical relics, hundreds of scaled down Chinese and American buildings, 117 life size wax statues, nearly a thousand small wax statues and clay figurines in six exhibition halls, namely, cityscape style, port opening, shiliyangchang, old traces on the sea, architecture Expo, chemachunqiu.

Main activities

New year's day climbing

The new year's Day activity of the Oriental Pearl TV tower has been held since 1996. With the beautiful meaning of "New Year's day, step by step, climb up" the activity has become a traditional national fitness event in Shanghai every new year's day.

Earth Hour

Since 2009, the Oriental Pearl TV tower has joined the "Earth Hour" campaign to respond to the WWF's call for energy conservation and emission reduction.

Every March 8th, the Oriental Pearl TV tower lights up pink lights and appeals to the whole society to care for women. Every year on April 2nd autism day, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower will be lit with blue lights, calling for social attention to autism in this form.
