Longmenshan Forest Park

Longmenshan Forest Park is located in the East and West Mountains on both sides of Yihe River, 13 kilometers away from the southern suburb of Luoyang City, Henan Province. Xishan is also known as Longmen Mountain, so it is named. It was called yique in ancient times, so it is also called yique grottoes. It was excavated in the 18th year of Taihe (494) of the Northern Wei Dynasty, before and after Emperor Xiaowen moved his capital to Luoyang. After that, it went through more than 1000 years from the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties to the end of the Qing Dynasty, especially in the Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties. Caves and niches are distributed on the cliffs of Longmen Mountain (West Mountain) and Xiangshan Mountain (East Mountain) on both sides of the Yi River. There are more than 2100 caves, more than 40 pagodas, 3860 inscriptions and more than 100000 statues. In Longmen Grottoes, the number of Tang Grottoes is the largest, accounting for about 2 / 3, and the typical Grottoes include Qianxi temple, Fengxian Temple, kanjing temple, etc.; the Northern Wei Dynasty takes the second place, accounting for about 1 / 3, and the typical Grottoes include Guyang cave, Binyang cave, Lianhua cave, Wanfo cave, etc. Most of the statues in the caves are Buddhas, disciples, Bodhisattvas, heavenly kings and powerful men. There are also secular donors and stories about Buddha and Bensheng. There are 11 statues carved in the cliff niches of Fengxian Temple, with the main Buddha lushenafo as high as 17 meters, and 15000 stone statues carved on the north and south walls of Wanfo cave, all of which are masterpieces of the Tang Dynasty. The number of inscriptions on the steles ranks first in China's grottoes. The famous ones, such as Longmen 20pin, represent the calligraphic works of Wei, early Tang and prosperous Tang Dynasties.
